Barcelona defender Gerard Pique and superstar singer Shakira welcomed their second child into the world on Thursday night.
Shakira gave birth to a baby boy without complications in a scheduled caesarean section at the Hospital Quiron Tecknon in Barcelona.
This past week, Shakira and the soccer pro held an online World Baby Shower, asking fans to donate to UNICEF's programs for kids. "Now that we're expecting our second child, we want to invite other expectant parents to host their own World Baby Shower," Shakira said in a statement. "You don't have to be a celebrity to make a difference -- the birth of your child can be a blessing that also saves thousands of children's lives around the world!"
In October, Shakira also chatted about being pregnant with baby No,2. "Now that I'm pregnant I'm trying, for the first time in my life, to not do so many things at the same time," she said. "Although, it’s always difficult and issues get in the way even when you don’t want them to. But the majority of the time I do dedicate myself to taking care of my belly, my pregnancy, [and] of Milan."
Pique, 27, and the Colombian pop-star, 37, announced the news in a statement shortly before midnight.
A name for the new-born, who arrives just over two years after the couple’s first child, Milan, is yet to be revealed.Around 24 hours before the birth, Pique had played the full 90 minutes in Wednesday night’s 3-2 Copa del Rey victory over Atletico Madrid at the Vicente Calderon.
As with their first child, Pique and Shakira will continue family tradition and make the baby an associate member of FC Barcelona.
The celebrity couple have been together since 2010. They announced their second pregnancy as well as the baby’s sex back in August 2014.
